Instead of selling dogs who are likely coming from puppy mills, Pets Plus of Quakertown will now offer rescued shelter dogs and puppies for adoption. The dogs will come from the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society in Kentucky, Animal Aid USA in New Jersey, Hub City Humane Society in Mississippi, Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Virginia, the Heart of Louisiana Humane Society, the Humane Society of Raleigh County in West Virginia and the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society in Mississippi. The store will join more than 2,500 other pet stores around the country that have signed the Puppy Friendly Pet Stores pledge of The Humane Society of the United States.
As of December 2015, the Pets Plus Natural pet store chain has converted all of its stores to this new humane model and offers kittens and other small rescue and shelter animals. The HSUS applauds Pets Plus of Quakertown for improving the community’s pet adoption rate and taking a stand against inhumane puppy mills.
Adoptable dogs and puppies will be available at the event and the first 25 customers will receive a free “Stop Puppy Mills” t-shirt. The first 100 customers will receive a “Stop Puppy Mills” button. Rep. Craig Staats and Lisa Walter (Sen. Bob Mensch’s Chief of Staff), R-Quakertown, will be in attendance and the store will have giveaways, food, a cash grab machine, face painting, the Pets Plus Rescue Bus and more.
WHO:
The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 2 million to 4 million puppies sold in the United States every year come from puppy mills, which are large-scale inhumane breeding facilities. Puppy mills contribute to the pet overpopulation problem, which results in about the same number of pets euthanized at shelters every year. Documented puppy mill conditions include over-breeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor food and shelter, crowded cages and lack of socialization.
